Frequently Asked Questions

How many annual leave days do I get in Qatar?

Under Qatar Labour Law, employees are entitled to a minimum of 30 days of paid annual leave per year after completing one full year of service. Before completing one year, you accrue leave proportionally (2.5 days per month). Some employment contracts or company policies may provide more than the legal minimum, but cannot provide less. The leave is calculated based on calendar days including weekends within the leave period.

Can I encash my unused annual leave in Qatar?

Yes. Unused annual leave can be encashed if the employer does not allow you to take the leave or at the end of the employment contract. The encashment value is calculated as: (Basic + Housing Allowance) ÷ 30 × leave days. Employees cannot be forced to forfeit earned leave. If you resign or are terminated, any accrued leave balance must be paid out as part of your final settlement.

What is the sick leave rule in Qatar Labour Law?

Qatar Labour Law provides: First 15 days of sick leave with full pay, the next 15 days at half pay, and the following 15 days without pay. After 45 days of sick leave in one year, the employer may terminate the contract if the employee cannot return to work. A medical certificate from an approved healthcare provider is required for sick leave beyond 2 days. You are not allowed to take annual leave and sick leave simultaneously for the same illness.

How is leave encashment calculated in Qatar?

Leave encashment in Qatar = (Basic Salary + Housing Allowance) ÷ 30 × Number of unused leave days. For example, if your basic is QAR 5,000 and housing allowance is QAR 1,500, your daily rate is QAR 6,500÷30 = QAR 216.67. If you have 15 unused leave days, your encashment is QAR 216.67 × 15 = QAR 3,250. Transport and other allowances are generally not included in leave encashment calculations unless specified in the contract.

When does my annual leave reset in Qatar?

Annual leave typically resets on your employment anniversary date (the same date you joined the company) or on January 1st of each year, depending on your employer's policy. Some companies use a rolling 12-month system while others use calendar year. Your employment contract should specify which system applies. Unused leave from the previous year may or may not carry forward, depending on company policy — Qatar law does not mandate a mandatory carry-forward limit.
