If your Iqama (Residence Permit) expires in Qatar without renewal, you are considered an illegal resident subject to overstay fines. The fine in 2026 is QAR 200 per day for the first month of overstay and QAR 400 per day after that, capped at QAR 10,000. Continued overstay can result in detention and deportation with a possible ban on re-entry to Qatar. Your employer is legally responsible for your Iqama status and can face penalties too.

It is strongly recommended to start the Iqama renewal process at least 30 days before expiry. The process involves medical testing, paperwork submission through Metrash2 or MOI online portal, and processing time of 3–10 business days. Starting early ensures you have buffer time if any documents are rejected or additional information is requested. Some medical centres and typing offices are busier during Eid and holidays, which can cause delays.

Renewal of Iqama requires employer sponsorship in Qatar's kafala (sponsorship) system. If your employer refuses to renew your Iqama, you have the right to file a complaint with Qatar's Ministry of Labour (MoL). Since 2020 reforms, workers can change employers without NOC after completing 1 year of service. You can also approach the Workers' Support and Insurance Fund. The Ministry can facilitate your transfer to a new employer or assist with exit if needed.

Iqama (Residence Permit) is your legal right to live in Qatar. Exit Permit (now abolished for most workers since August 2020) was previously required to leave Qatar. As of 2020, most expat workers in Qatar can leave the country without needing an exit permit from their employer, except for certain government and military roles. This was a major reform to the kafala system. Your Iqama has no relation to exit permits and does not restrict travel as long as you return before expiry.

You can check your Iqama expiry date via: (1) Metrash2 app — available on iOS and Android, (2) MOI Qatar website at portal.moi.gov.qa, or (3) Hukoomi portal. You will need your Iqama number (QID number) and date of birth. Alternatively, the expiry date is printed on the back of your physical Iqama card.
