Read Guide →NSC is a fixed-income savings scheme by the Government of India, available at post offices. It has a 5-year lock-in, offers guaranteed interest (currently 7.7% compounded annually), and qualifies for tax deduction under Section 80C up to 1.5 lakh per year.
The NSC interest rate is revised quarterly by the government. As of early 2026, the rate is 7.7% per annum, compounded annually but payable at maturity. Check the India Post website for the latest quarterly rate announcement.
NSC interest compounds annually. For a 1 lakh investment at 7.7%: Year 1 interest is 7,700, Year 2 is 8,293, and so on. After 5 years, you receive approximately 1,44,903. Interest earned in years 1 to 4 is reinvested and qualifies for additional 80C deduction.
NSC offers guaranteed government-backed returns with 80C tax benefits. Bank FDs may offer similar rates but interest is fully taxable. NSC reinvested interest qualifies for additional 80C deduction, making post-tax returns higher for those in the 30% bracket.
Premature withdrawal is generally not allowed except for death of holder, forfeiture by pledgee, or court order. You can use NSC as loan collateral. The lock-in ensures disciplined savings but means your money is illiquid for 5 years.
